Therapies
Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy
Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT) explores difficult past experiences, especially previous relationship difficulties, to understand how they may affect the way you feel and behave in the present.
How it works
You may not be fully aware of how you feel and behave in the present as it becomes second nature; ‘the way things are’.
These unconscious patterns can cause problems in relationships, which in turn can be linked to depression.
In DIT we draw your attention to how these patterns may be affecting your relationships. The aim of the therapy is to help you understand yourself better and change the way you respond.
What it’s like
Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT) and Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) have several common features but they are not the same therapy.
In essence, more time is spent reflecting on difficult past experiences in DIT and the therapy is less directive. In contrast, IPT is a more here-and-now, structured, goal-focused therapy.
An important part of DIT is that it uses what happens in the relationship between you and your therapist to help think about the problems in your life.
You may find that we are a bit more ‘silent’ than you might be used to. This is not because we are being unfriendly, but because it’s important in DIT to give you space to reflect and process what is on your mind.
Another aspect of DIT is that we won’t always answer your questions directly. Sometimes we may be interested in what lies behind your questions.
