What we treat

Post-traumatic stress disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is triggered by a terrifying or shocking event — either experiencing it or witnessing it.

Symptoms may include re-living the traumatic event in vivid flashbacks or nightmares with intense distress, feeling the trauma is happening right now all over again.

The condition was first recognised in war veterans and was known as 'shell shock'. It’s now understood that PTSD can be caused by a wide range of experiences (e.g., giving birth, car accident, abuse).

Most people with PTSD who receive therapy finish feeling better and more able to manage their symptoms.

Signs & Symptoms

Symptoms of PTSD may start within one month of a traumatic event, but sometimes symptoms may not appear until years after the event.

Signs and symptoms of PTSD may include:

  • Recurrent, unwanted distressing memories of the traumatic event

  • Reliving the traumatic event as if it were happening again (flashbacks)

  • Upsetting dreams or nightmares about the traumatic event

  • Severe emotional distress or physical reactions to something that reminds you of the traumatic event

  • Trying to avoid thinking or talking about the traumatic event

  • Avoiding places, activities or people that remind you of the traumatic event

  • Being easily startled or frightened

  • Always being on guard for danger

These symptoms may cause difficulties in day-to-day activities such as work, studying, social activities or relationships with others.
